Indiana limestone, Brazilian granite, and a graduated Vermont slate roof ground an otherwise distinctly English Neoclassical composition in American materials, joined by zinc-coated copper metalwork, Tradewood mahogany windows and doors, and custom imported bronze exterior doors by Les Métalliers Champenois of Paris. Franck.For all its formality of composition, the house was conceived from the outset in service of the family who would live within it, its grand rooms as much a setting for daily life as for the classical architecture and art they hold. The front door and its bespoke metalwork open to a grand center hall with twelve-foot ceilings, floored in broad slabs of Jerusalem gold marble and meeting a transverse rear limestone gallery that spans the width of the main level, bridging the principal rooms and looking out onto a great lawn. Franck carried the strength and profile of the limestone exterior inside, translating it into robust, hand-carved millwork scaled to the height of the rooms, paired with roaring fireplaces beneath intricate mantels of matching character. The evening pavilion holds the formal library, its fourteen-foot ceilings and walnut and mahogany paneling creating a dignified space for the post-dinner retreat. At the opposite end of the main level, the morning pavilion gathers the informal rooms, the true heart of the home, also rising to fourteen-foot ceilings: a chef's kitchen, an adjacent breakfast area with a large bay window overlooking the walled kitchen garden and cypress pergola, and a generous family room crowned by a striking cherry ceiling, with a bluestone terrace just beyond to blur the line between al fresco and indoor living.A center hall of its own introduces the upper level and its soaring 10'2" ceilings, anchored by a fantastic staircase in the tradition of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, four feet wide and cantilevered, rising the full three stories in one continuous, winding sweep. The primary suite occupies half the footprint, entered through an intimate vestibule and comprising a sitting room, private access to the upper terrace, an expansive dressing room, and a lavish bath with radiant heated flooring. Two secondary bedrooms in the opposite wing each have ensuite baths, while the third level holds two additional generous bedrooms and a large hall bath, ample room for children, grandchildren, and guests to make the house their own. The main house is joined by a three-car garage with a separate large suite above, complete with a full bath, easily adapted as an on-site office, staff suite, or additional guest quarters. Conceived as a common gathering place, the lower level offers fitness and massage facilities, an embassy-sized recreation room, and laundry.Beyond the residence stands a historic log guest house, often referred to as the summer house, part of a private retreat with a wisteria-covered pergola encircling a sparkling lap pool, with far-ranging views across the rolling landscape beyond.
